8th Grader Izzy: The final results are in!

Great news!! We got our specialized and non-specialized school results back yesterday, and I got into my first-choice specialized high school...

I'm really excited and really proud, because I honestly didn't expect to make it. I was on a bus riding back from a school trip when my mom called with the results, and I could hardly believe what I was hearing when she told me I had been accepted. I guess all of my hard work finally paid off! A whole bunch of kids from my grade also made it in, so if I do end up going there, I'll have a ton of already-made friends to help me out and ride the subways with me.

On the downside, I didn't seem to get accepted to my non-specialized school choice (the one in my neighborhood)...
which I was a little upset about, considering I really thought that I had nailed that interview. But I suppose there was something about me that they didn't like, or maybe they just ran out of room. I heard a rumor that there is a second letter that might arrive sometime in March from Bard with the final word (because they get a lot of applicants and don't always have time to get out the results, or something along those lines), which would tell me once and for all if I have gotten in there, but I'm not holding my breath. Whatever the reason, I'll be bummed for a little while, but I'm sure I'll get over it soon enough.

At the same time, I got into Bronx Science (I love the way that looks when I type it out!) and I really have no reason to complain. I accomplished my goal in finding a great school, and I'm mind-numbingly proud that I made it through all this without losing my cool.

Congratulations, Izzy! You must feel so relieved — I'm certainly relieved for you!

I'm so excited for you! I wish I would've gotten into something like Bronx Science. Unfortunately, I got into The Brooklyn Latin School. I'm not sure if the school is worth it. I would've loved Queens Sci much better. I'm actually considering not accepting my specialized school. I'm still a little stuck. I've never heard a great deal about this school, but Bronx Science, oh boy!!

Izzy -- Take heart about Bard, these things seem so capricous!

My son who is one of the top 3 students at his middle school did not get into his first choice (Beacon) either. And many less qualified students (not in my opinion, but in the opinion of the guidance counselor) did. He was also positive he nailed the interview, plus he has a sibling at Beacon who is a straight "A" student and we are active, involved parents.

One of his best friends, a girl with top grades, scores, extracurriculars, etc. didn't get her first choice either -- and the guidance counselor said if any two kids worked hard and earned the right to their first choice, it was these two. She wondered if there was a computer error! Go figure...

FYI -- He got into his second choice (another competitive school) where he was certain he flubbed the interview...

In the end, it seems like the most convenient choice isn't always "meant to be" -- and perhaps not getting into Bard is a clear sign you are supposed to schlep all the way up to Bronx Science. Congratulations -- celebrate what's great and don't give much energy to what's not.

Congratulations, I also got in Bronx Science I'll probably see you there next year, or maybe later in the week at the open house.

Izzy -- congrats! I am so glad you mentioned all the schools you were looking at. I think your honest impressions of what you went through -- the process, the interviews, the preparation, the ranking of schools -- is so helpful to parents and kids, as are the comments that followed. It's very confusing, and sometimes decisions feel arbirtary. Wouldn't it be nice if it this process made more sense?

Congragulations. I was as happy as you were when I found out about getting into Stuyvesant. Bronx Science is MUCH better than Bard, in my opinion and I would concentrate on the good news of getting into Bronx Science.

Your mom called you with the news? Why wasn't your phone confiscated?

ugh it didn't verify my comment last time so i'll just retype it now.

the ski trip so weird for me... but i know everyone had a good time. phones are allowed by our principals, and the teachers didn't really notice. i can't believe it, i got a 560 and wasn't accepted into stuy, but i'm glad i'll have another 4 years with you.

the bard acceptance should be on the same shsat letter if you were accepted into bx sci. if not, you can reject the bx sci seat and participate in the main round, and you'll get a letter with results (possibly bard?) in march. i can't believe bard wouldn't accept you, you're one of the most charming people to talk to!

but bronx science kicks bard's booty! ;)
