Any G+T, Middle School News, Parents?

Here's the start of a G+T thread for parents to share information, leads, and news.

The latest sense we have is that citywide gifted and talented schools have sent out acceptances and rejections; parents have yet to hear from other schools to which their children applied.

Andy Jacob of the DOE says "some middle school offer letters went out late last week. The rest should go out today. Parents should receive the letters this week. Parents expecting letters who haven't received them by next Monday (June 9) should contact their child's guidance counselor. Acceptances are due June 12."

Know more? Have questions? Pipe up.

I caved and called the DOE on Friday. I was told that middle school notifications would be sent out Friday evening, Saturday, and Monday. I was also asked if and when guidance counselors would receive placement lists and was told they would have them today. I also asked about an appeals process (I am in district 15) and was told that it would be the same as last year. I haven't been able to reach the guidance counselor and when I asked her about the appeals process a couple of weeks ago she told me that they were changing it and that she would receive the new procedure with the placement list.

Mind boggling and messed up.

I am the District 15 poster. Just checked the mail. Nothing.

I am simply amazed at how late this process is. Are they trying to dissuade people from appealing? Its outrageous!

I'm waiting on a G&T letter for my daughter who will be entering K. We only applied to one program - Anderson. So far we've received nothing. Can anyone else confirm that they received an acceptance or rejection letter for a citywide G&T?

Luckily, my twins got into NEST. Unluckily, it is there second choice after Mark Twain, and if they don't hear from Twain before Thursday when Nest has an orientation, they will have to attend that, perhaps unnecessarily.

Please clarify: this thread is for G&T middle school placements, not G&T kindergarten placements?

This is meant to be a g+t thread, for both middle-school and K. If there's a sense we need to split the threads, we can -- but that risks a dissipated conversation. Let's see what happens.

The commas confused me. I thought it it was for G&T AND non-gifted middle schools.

From the above district 15 parent.

>citywide gifted and talented schools have sent out acceptances and rejections;

Is this referring to K process or Middle school process??

I'm waiting for K notification, (ours are bad enough) but feel really sorry for the people waiting for Middle school notification. Hope every thing will be sorted out this week,,,,

Can I just ask for a little clarification -- when you said the G&T citywide school letters already went out, did you mean for K or middle school? Sorry to be so muddled!

Ok, so it seems clear we should have separate threads, with so many comments and questions coming in. Sorry for the e-detours, and watch for the next post, pronto.

I know of citywide (Anderson, Nest etc) middle school letters going out at least a week ago. However I do not know of any district 3 (west side of the big island) letter arriving in any households yet.

It seems like citywide G and T notices for both K and Middle School have gone out. Middle school non-gifted have not gone out, or at least not been received yet.

My daughter checks the mailbox everyday for news re: Mark Twain (middle school). My older daughter was accepted last year, and we had to notify the school by June 1. It is a loooong wait for kids and parents to know where they will be in September.

I would love to know if anyone receives any word in the mail in the next few days. It has to be soon, right???

Thank you for the separate thread for K -- but my question remains, when you heard letters for citywides had gone out, did you mean middle school or K? Thank you for your patience and assistance!

Got nothing in the mail today regarding D2 middle schools. Bummer.

Since there is going to be a very little window period between when we are notified about G&T middle school and when we have to accept a school does anyone know how the appeal process works? We are awaiting decisions in District 21 and 22. bay Academy, Cig in Cunningham etc. Does each district have a designated appeal person or do we have to go to OSEPO?

We haven't heard anything at all from Mark Twain or District 15. When we did this for our son, three years ago, we knew by March. The long waiting period this time around is really stressful. My daughter has already had two nightmares, waking up in the morning saying she dreamed she didn't get into any middle school. Is the DOE doing this to avoid a lengthy appeals process? I think the whole thing is shameful. They behave like bureaucrats who can't get out of their own, or anyone else's way, not educators who care about children and families.

My child's district 15 elementary school has the roster of middle school placements. I received an acceptance directly from the middle school on the middle school's letterhead so I am not exactly sure what the DOE was mailing out.

Anybody get their mail today yet with District 15 or 21 info? It should come today or tomorrow, shouldn't it, if it really was sent out Fri, Sat or Mon. as OSEPO implied last week.

Nothing in the mail today I am in D3

Anonymous said...

Nothing for us today in the mail D2.

Anonymous said...

Nothing here in D3 for me on middle school placement either. Helen, can you please contact OSEPO and ask if the middle school letters have all been sent at this point? Hard to believe that if DOE letters were sent Friday, Saturday and yesterday, nobody would have received one yet. And nobody has (at least over here and on Urban Baby).

Nothing from D3 on Tuesday

At our school in District 15 no one has heard except from Nest as far as I know.
If they say that the letters should be in our hands by the 9th and then we have to accept by the 12th. When do we appeal?
I am furious at the lack of respect that the DOE has shown these kids. It is unbelievable.

Anonymous said...

Why the 9th? First it was early May, then May 15th, then end of May, then first week June, now June 9th - what gives? What was the problem? Shouldn't we at least know what happened? This is ridiculous!

Anonymous said...

today June 4th and STILL no letters from middle schools.

To 5:49

I'm in D15 and my daughter heard from NEST about two weeks ago as did many other kids (including acceptances and rejections). Those letters came from the school itself not from OSEPO. You should call the school if you haven't gotten your letter. It might've gotten lost in the mail.

When you say you have heard from NEST, is this K or Middle school?

just received message on machine, from doe, saying they wondered if i did not send back application for g+t for 1st grade. obviously, they did not receive it and of course i sent it. wondering if anybody else has heard similar horror story. thanks

We applied to Nest for Middle school and received a rejection with no explanation. I've been trying to find out how he scored in his exam but have received no response from Nest. Any idea how I can find out what were admissions criteria, cut-offs, his score etc.
