Finally! G+T Kindergarten and Pre-K Action

According to the DOE, placement letters for g+t kindergarten are in the mail, at last.

They assert some families will have news today, others, over the next few days.

We've also heard directly from the family of a pre-K sibling who didn't initially get a seat -- but whose case was resolved favorably this afternoon, with a place offered (and accepted!) in their first-choice school. Any others with this experience, let us know.

Please let us know when your news arrives.

District 1. Nothing in the mail today. Its a relief to know the letters have finally gone out. Now hoping for good news.

Anonymous said...

Does that mean _all_ G&T K letters are in the mail?

I'll definitely post once we get the letter.

Anonymous said...

Is it only for K, or are 1st grade placements coming as well? thanks.

gingerbrownie said...

My rejected twin did finally get accepted to PreK, but others haven't been so lucky -- zoned kids in PS 9 in D 13 are being told they just lost out on the zoned lottery -- when even out of district kids got in! Also happening in D 15

Bottom line is there have been some huge f**k ps & phenomenal lack of transparency & communication. The DOE still need to account.

Anonymous said...

I will believe it when I see it

Anonymous said...

What should I do I still did not get the Pre-K result for my son.

Anonymous said...

We were placed in our 4th choice across town when we could see our 1st district choice from our window. Can we appeal this decision or do we just walk past our nieghborhood school on the way to the bus?

Anonymous said...

Helen!

People on UB are saying that letters are being hand delivered. Could you please check to see if this is the case or if it is fake! We haven't received anything!

Anonymous said...

Our G&T letter was hand-delivered this am to us in Brooklyn through our front door slot. No postage; totally WEIRD!!! I appreciate the care in sending it, but the cost has to be INSANE!!

Unknown said...

this morning our G&T letter was delivered by a man in a van, as it was to my neighbor on 92nd street. It seems like the DOE and OSEPO have decided to have the letters hand-delivered!

Marc said...

Ours was hand delivered. I am SO angry right now. My daughter scored in the 97% which made her eligible for the city-wide program. She was accepted to our LAST CHOICE and it was a district program. I should not even have put this school down bc she will NOT go to PS 111. There was that threat that "if you don't put down all of the schools in order, you run the risk of not getting an offer at all."
We have a very undesirable neighborhood school, so I do not know what I am going to do.

Anonymous said...

A man in a black van hand delivered our placement letter; we're in Brooklyn, too. Our daughter got her first choice, NEST, so we're very happy and thankful the wait is over!
Hang in there everyone, it seems the news is on the way...

Anonymous said...

We're in Brooklyn, applying for first grade and also got letter delivered this morning.

Anonymous said...

yes i got a letter. i saw this and didn't think it was true, so went downstairs and it was there, along w/ 3 others.
we got ps 163 ( our 3rd choice w/ a 99) but still happy. it's supposed to be a good program

Anonymous said...

Mine was also hand delivered in early AM this morning. District 22 for 1st grade.

Anonymous said...

District 13 - got letter today

Anonymous said...

Our G&T letter was hand delivered right around noon today -- we're on the Upper West Side. But by "hand delivered," I mean slipped under the front door of our building. I don't know if they even tried our buzzer. My husband happened to come along right after the guy left, so he found the letter, but it did make us question what could have happened to it if we didn't find it so quickly.

We received a placement at our second ranked school (a local G&T, where our first choice was citywide). Our child had tested in the 99th percentile.

Anonymous said...

We also got a hand delivered GT letter today (and I am happy with our placement). We are in District 3.
The doorman said the person who came was from the school and had letters for all the kids in the building who have been waiting to hear from GT response.

I wonder if the GT had to pay overtime for this Saturday delivery time using their employees?

Anonymous said...

We received our hand delivered results today. This process has been horrible and I am glad it is over!

Anonymous said...

We received our (delivered to our doorman) this morning. We got our first choice, so very relieved! Must respond to offer by June 20.

Anonymous said...

Our friends got their G&T letter delivered by hand. Ours was in our mailbox without any postage.

Anonymous said...

D2: nothing for G&T K today.

Anonymous said...

yep, I am from district 28 and also this morning (sat morning, June 14) we received the letter at the front of our apt building with no postage stamp too. Anyone has any additonal info on how G&T will be run? Also any goss on how PS174 is like?

Anonymous said...

Our G&T letter was hand delivered to our apt on the upper west side. My child scored in the 95% and we received our 3rd choice.

Anonymous said...

Just FYI: When our selective MS letter came it had no postmark but it was most certainly NOT hand delivered. It came with the regular mailman but was some sort of bulk mailing that had no cancellation mark over the postal permit.

Anonymous said...

Nothing in District 2. Of course.

Anonymous said...

Our letter in D2 was hand delivered this morning (Saturday) and left with our doorman while we were out. Happy news for us. Good luck to you all...

Anonymous said...

District 15 - nothing in today's mail.

Anonymous said...

Received the letter today, around 1pm.District 25. No postage also. ;)

Anonymous said...

Re 10:56am, I can't believe I am doubting the veracity of a poster, and I can't imagine why anyone would post something untrue, but I find it very, very hard to understand why a letter would be hand-delivered from the DOE. You can not be the same poster from Urban Baby, as that person was not in Brooklyn. What was your received result? And has ANYONE besides this poster received a letter?

Anonymous said...

District 15 (Park Slope). Nothing in the mail today. Sigh...

Anonymous said...

I find it amazing how my daughter was placed in our 4th choice (PS 191). We live across the street from PS 163 and now if we want to take part in the G&T program we will have to add a 15-20 minute commute to our already busy schedules. Thank you Klein, I guess you got what you wanted. To place kids in less desierable schools.

Anonymous said...

Our G&T leeter was hand delivered in Brooklyn as well. I was upstairs when the bell rang and some guy saying he dropped the letter thru the door. I paid it no attention as I thought it was some junj mail until later I went downstairs and there it was...kinda strange. So sad did not get into the school I wanted. Does anyone know whats going on with PS 282 in Parkslope?

Anonymous said...

Nothing in the mail today (Saturday). Awaiting District 2 G & T placement letter.

Anonymous said...

Ours was hand-delivered to the doorman.

Anonymous said...

g&t letter in the mail today. d21.

Anonymous said...

District 3. We found our G&T Kindergarten letter this early afternoon apparently hand delivered (no postage) on the floor (!) in front of our post box.
Totally irresponsible to just put such an important letter on the floor in a walking area where more than a hundred families have their post boxes! And currently there is a lot of mail lying around here of people that have recently moved out here, so it could have easily gone into the dust bin...
Checked it only because I saw the NYC DOE logo on it. Do not want to imagine what would have happened to it if we had not checked at such a time of day when normally the post man is not delivering anymore.
And of course we did only get our second choice...
Good luck to all of you who are still waiting!

Anonymous said...

Did anyone NOT get a letter today, besides me?

Welshgrrl said...

As of now (5:30pm) we don't have a letter. Brooklyn--District 15.

Anonymous said...

Still no letter in upper Manhattan.

Anonymous said...

Nothing delivered for us either (as of 5:45pm), District 15, 11231. Very frustrating.

Anonymous said...

District 15 and didn't receive anything. I find the method of delivering such an important document, with no accountability, completely ridiculous.

Helen do you know if they are delivering tomorrow do we have to wait until Mon (when everyone is at work)?

Anonymous said...

Thank you Emma, I'm not alone! :) I honestly don't know what I would do without this blog, it is the only way I can connect with other G&T-waiting parents...

Anonymous said...

Received hand delivered letter today. My son scored in the 98% and we received our 3rd choice in District 22.

Anonymous said...

We found the letter from DOE under our apartment door, without postage.

My son, who was in the 99th percentile, was not admitted to his our first and only citwide choice for kindergarten. I'm prepared to accept the luck of the draw, though I would like to know what the odds were.

The letter offered our child "a place in a program, available to students from your district [10, where there are no G&T programs next year], which you did not rank and which has not yet filled." Does anyone know what this might be?

Anonymous said...

No letter today in Sunset Park.

We're in District 15 too. We received the letter for one of our children but not the other.

Did anyone from the district get letters today? Did anyone get PS.101 or PS.144?

District 28. No letter today.

As of 2:00 pm today no letter, D2, zip 10016. The posts on Urban Baby are more informative and weird, specifically in seeing how this lottery system played out.

Anonymous said...

No letter District 1.

my daughter scored 97% and got in our 10th choice school!!!
They wrote on top of it "congratulations" Are they joking?
I'm not leaving it like this. District 22. I remember there was a table with results for each district- is someone has a link?

Anonymous said...

I'm waiting for a 2nd grade placement in District 3 and have no letter today (unless the idiots left it under our lobby door and it was trampled or accidentally thrown out with the restaurant brochures). Has anyone received a letter for non-kindergarten kids?

district 10 received letter tonight 7pm hand delivery, got 2nd choice nest at 99%

RECEIVED LETTER FOR 1st grade (DIST20) early this afternoon.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the pointer to UB - very interesting (and, not surprisingly, annoying) dialogue there. But also raises a fascinating question -- how many kids scored 99% in NYC? My understanding was that it was about 225, and that there were about 200 slots in the citywide available (50 at A, 50 at TAG, 100 at nest+m). Assuming that not all 99s would choose citywide, how is it that so many 99s didn't get first choice? At Anderson, it was explained to us that the 99% were chosen first in the lottery...
All seems very fishy to me.

Anonymous said...

District 15, got our letter hand-delivered -- tucked into our door -- this morning. My guess is that the DOE wanted to get the letters into parents' hands as soon as possible in order to keep to their timeline: Families need to let them know by June 20 if they accept or decline the slots they've been offered. Given the reliability (or lack thereof) of the postal system (our neighborhood recently had a bag of mail stolen from our postal worker as he was making his rounds), I'm delighted the DOE took the time and care to hand deliver. I'm betting that those of you who have not gotten letters will get them tomorrow.

We got our letter today. We were pleased with the news and surprized because we appied for a school where the principle actually told me at the tour, that even though my son did well on the test it was unlikely that there would be a seat for him in 1st grade. Go figure!

Anonymous said...

My son received his letter (yes it was hand delivered in D20)and will be matriculating at PS 229 (his first choice) in September.

He scored a 99 and we were wondering how they chose amoung the99 Percentile kids who wanted to go to a citywide program.

In the end, we decided not to apply because of the long distance. Still wondering if we made the right choice.

I am considering starting a Facebook page for the G&T kids for Dyker 2008. Any interest?

Good luck to all.

Anonymous said...

Woohoo! District 3 here. Our daughter (99%) was accepted into our first/only choice school.

Anonymous said...

We're in District 13 in Brooklyn. My husband got a doorbell ring and a hand delivered letter yesterday (Saturday). Daughter was 99% and we got our first choice. So glad to be done.

Any district 13 parents on? If so where are your kids going?

It would be great if people who have recvd their scores were more
specific as to what their childs

Has anyone recvd Anderson?
If so, what is your childs score, gender, etc...?

Gifted & Talented Assessment Program Update

Gifted and Talented placement letters were sent on Friday, June 13. Families will begin receiving letters this weekend. The deadline to accept or decline a placement offer is Friday, June 20.

How can DOE explain some District 15 (or elsewhere) children receiving hand-delivered letters and others not? We are D15, 99% and someone was at home all day Saturday after 1pm. No letter.

If the New York State Council on the Arts can deliver funding information to grantees by email, why can't the DOE?

Has anyone recived NEST (for 1st grade)?

Like many others who did not yet receive a letter, I am curious if they will deliver today -- if anyone receives a letter on Sunday, please do post!

Anonymous said...

I got mine this morning! Dropped in the mailbox, no postage!
Got my #2 choice, same school my DC attends now, PS 144, Dist.28
Very Excited, but process has taken a toll on my nerves!
Ridiculous how much $$$ DOE spent on mail hand delivery. Must have been delivered first thing today, as I checked last night

Anonymous said...

In district 3 & picked up my letter from my old apartment building today, despite the fact that I had notified the DOE of our address change in good time and had actually received my son's G&T results at our new address in April! Thankfully my friend and old neighbour saw the letter by the mail boxes yesterday, picked it up and notified me. Got 3rd choice PS 163, and pleased the whole thing is over. Good luck to everyone still waiting.

Anonymous said...

I am wondering if anyone got into NEST for 1st grade, too ? If so, what did the child score and did sibling policy applied. DD got 99% and place NEST as 1st & Anderson
2nd, but got third choice - district G & T.

..Helen,
It is bound to happen...someone will not recv their letter and will not know if it was hand delvd or just not sent or lost...pls find out frome the DOE who they need to contact if they don't recv by mon or tues since they want to hear by 6/20...just trying to be proactive in a timely manner..I am Dist 5/waiting for results...I know nothing can be done today, sun.

Not at home, so still don't know whether or not we got a letter or what our placement was. Wondering exactly how this lottery occurred. My guess, before the posts of the past two days, was that the lottery would occur with the highest scoring kids getting first choice at every school. Not so sure now, if the posts on Urban Baby are correct, that this happened. Anyone else have any theories, conspiracy or otherwise?

Anonymous said...

After chewing our nails over the past weekend, we just received our hand-delivered acceptance letter (at of 2:50PM - first choice NEST/ds/99th percentile/dist. 28(Forest Hills)) - keep your hopes up, apparently the DOE is still distributing letters this Sunday...

Anonymous said...

Yes the DOE told me that first the siblings were placed; then the 99s each received a random number and were placed in that order; then the 98s, and so on down the line.

Anonymous said...

We got our letter hand-delivered Sat. No gifted programs in our zone so we could only apply to citywide programs and we got our third (and last) choice. My daughter scored in the 99th percentile.

Anonymous said...

Our son - 98th percentile -- got into our third choice.

BTW did any 98s get into NEST?

Anonymous said...

has anyone in PS or D15 received a letter today (sunday)?

Anonymous said...

District 28, letter taped to front door today. 97%, first choice ps 101, did not apply citywide. DC loves 101.

Anonymous said...

District 28 (Forest Hills):

Can you please post your child's score and school assignment?

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

D1: our son, 98% got into our third choice, PS 110, and we had hoped for NEST. Letter was hand delivered, and we were away for the weekend so it was just sitting on the ledge by the mailboxes for anybody to see.

Anonymous said...

D2: 99%/boy

Didn't get into Anderson as first and only choice. I guess its time to move to the burbs.

Anonymous said...

I can't help but think that children are not getting accepted to their higher ranked g&t neighborhood school, but are being placed in a lower ranked, harder to travel to school that the DOE wants people to get fed up with this program. The absence of a waitlist is very telling.

Anonymous said...

D15 99% no mail today

Anonymous said...

Rec'd Letter yesterday, District 4.
Our daughter 99% got into our 2nd choice which is TAG.

Anonymous said...

District 11 (Bronx). Should I naturally assume if we do not get a letter over the weekend then my daughter, who got a 97%, did not get accepted in any of the city-wide program? Because we live in the Bronx there was no district school for K to applied to. Did anyone receive a denial letter?

Anonymous said...

To 6:42:

A few people have posted that they got letters stating they didn't get any spots. We're in the Bronx also with a 99 and still haven't gotten a letter.

Anonymous said...

District 2, got 124 our 4th choice. Did anyone else get this placement and are you going to accept it?

Congratulations to all who got a placement they are happy with it.

Anonymous said...

6:11pm - you are giving the doe way too much credit. There is just way too much demand for a few really popular g&t spots. That's all there is to it. And no waitlist is a good thing; it makes the application process easy and removes any opportunity to "game" the system.

Anonymous said...

Well we were away for the weekend, no doorman and no letter. How are we supposed to find out by Friday??
Helen - please advise! is there a number to call?

Anonymous said...

D13, 97pct. Letter arrived today (Sunday). Applied to one citywide program and no district-wide programs. Didn't get in -- no great surprise.

Interestingly, the second paragraph of the letter seemed to encourage application to a district-wide program. I wonder if they're having trouble filling district G&T classrooms.

Anonymous said...

RE the pre-k mess: the DOE FINALLY fixed our problem (data entry mistake on their part, when we had a sibling in the school) & we registered our child late last week. Very relieved! It took lots of phone calls, emails & persistence on our part to get this to happen, and we also had the principal & pre-k teacher helping us navigate the system. Even with all that, it took a very long time. We are in District 28 in Queens.

Anonymous said...

RE pre-k mess: What school in District 28?

Anonymous said...

D22, 98pct. Letter arrived yesterday(Mon) by regular mail. Did not receive "hand delivered" mail though we are in a doorman-building. Applied to NEST but accepted into 217 which was our 2nd choice. We are happy overall that the school is in our neighborhood, have some friends already and IT'S FINALLY OVER - DOE should realize exactly what trouble, inconvenience and frustration they caused to all the families in the city.

Anonymous said...

We got our letter on 6/17 with a deadline of 6/20 (can you believe that). It was also very disappointing to me because my daughter received a 98% but was placed in our last choice - the district school and not one of the citywide schools. I've sent several emails to DOE requesting that they provide me with # of available seats and the qualifying statistics and they have finally provided a link (but only for the qualifying statistics, still waiting to find out how many seats were actually available). Here’s the link http://www.insideschools.org/nv/NV_GT_4_15_apr08-chart.php.

re: pre-k
thrilled to report that my rejected sibling was correctly placed last week at her big brothers school! after yelling, blogging, petitioning, begging and crying, she got her rightful spot. it continues to be tragic that some did not get spots. what a mess. in our case a happy ending.

Anonymous said...

Congrats. Great news. Wondering to whom I should yell, blog, petition, to find my son (98%) a seat in a 2nd grade G&T program that makes sense for us geographically. Any recs?
